Annual General Meeting 2009

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Police Mutual Assurance Society Limited took place on Wednesday 6 May at The Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Hotel, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

As in previous years there were a number of re-elections and changes to the Committee of Management at the 2009 AGM.  The objective of the Committee of Management is to express what members want from the Society in terms of products and services and ensure the strong link with the Police Service continues.  The          re-elections and changes are listed below.

Two of the existing Vice Presidents were re-elected. These were Julie Spence, Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire Constabulary and David Strang, Chief Constable of Lothian and Borders Police.  Co-opted Vice President Sir Norman Bettison, Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police was formally elected as Vice President. In addition two new Vice Presidents, Sir Hugh Orde, Chief Constable of Police Service of Northern Ireland and Chris Sims, Chief Constable of Staffordshire Police were elected. Ian Johnston, Chief Constable of the British Transport Police retired as Vice President and was thanked for his contribution to the Society during his time as a member of the Committee of Management.

As Chief Executive of the Society, Stephen Mann was elected to the Committee of Management.

Seven of the eight existing members of the Committee of Management were             re-elected.  These were Aidan Beck of The Metropolitan Police; Philip Haworth of Greater Manchester Police; Gary Horsburgh of Fife Constabulary; Michael Joiner of West Midlands Police; Gareth Jones of Hampshire Constabulary; Ieuan Watkins of Gwent Police and Nicholas Wyer of Dorset Police.  Glenn Milne retired as a member of the Committee of Management and was thanked for the commitment he had shown the Society since his appointment in 2005.

To ensure that Police Mutual has access to external, professional, financial and commercial advice, Richard Coates, John Giffard, and Mike Urmston were re-elected as the Non-Executive Directors.  In addition, Ian Geden was newly elected as a Non-Executive Director.  David Davies retired as a Non-Executive and was thanked for the support he had given the Society during his term of office.

Other business carried out at the AGM included receiving the 2008 Annual Accounts, Report of the Committee of Management and Auditor’s Report, approving the 2008 Remuneration Report and re-appointing PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP as the Society’s Auditor. 

At the Conference John Giffard was re-appointed as Chairman of the Committee of Management.
